Education Is A Right! Organize Against the Budget Cuts
February 12 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm UTC-6
Gov. Greitens’ proposed budget will slash funding for higher education in Missouri by $98 million, or 10.8 percent. The UM System will take a cut of $43 million from the previous year. This, of course, is on top of last year’s budget cut, and at the same time the Governor is proposing to reduce the state’s corporate tax rate to the second lowest in the nation.
To make up for the lost revenue, the UM System is supporting a bill that will allow it to raise tuition fees by up to 10 percent, transferring more of the financial burden of university education to students, and contributing to rising debt.
As members of the MU and Columbia communities, we must forcefully oppose these cuts. While the budget process proceeds in the Legislature, there is still time to stop the cuts from being implemented. Join us for a discussion on what we can do to voice our opposition to the Governor’s proposal, while presenting a positive case for education as a public good that must be adequately funded.
We will meet on the MU campus at 7 p.m. in Middlebush Hall room 206. Everyone who cares deeply about the future of MU and higher education generally is welcome!
