How Do We Stop Gun Violence? Building Resistance from Tragedy

March 14, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm UTC-4

Another school shooting.

Another killer with white supremacist motives.

The NRA rejoices as gun sales go up.

Gun violence and mass shootings are a part of everyday life in the US to an extent unrivaled in the industrialized world. But we can’t explain this merely in terms of a Wild West “gun culture.” The 17 people, mostly students, who lost their lives in the recent Parkland, FL shooting are the latest victims of a rise in white supremacist terrorism, which even the racist Department of Homeland Security identified as the greatest political extremist threat to US civilians.

As usual, Republicans scream “mental illness” and call for more “good guys with guns,” while Democrats try to confine outrage to the technocratic framework of “gun control” and ignore the fundamentally political nature of the crisis. But more people than ever are breaking out of this narrow debate.

Join the International Socialist Organization–Lehman College Branch to discuss what is really at work here in the US’s landscape of violence and how we can build a better world.
