No Human is Illegal! Socialist Discussion on Immigration
February 13 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm UTC-5
Why does capitalism create the racism and borders and immigration policies that divide, dehumanize and oppress immigrants today? Join the Brooklyn College Socialists for a discussion on how socialists understand immigration under capitalism, so we can fight for a world without borders!!
The reading comes from the book No One Is Illegal: Fighting Racism and State Violence on the U.S-Mexico Border by Justin Akers Chacón and Mike Davis. Chacón is also working on a forthcoming book called Radicals in the Barrio: Magonistas, Socialists, Wobblies, and Communists in the Mexican American Working Class.

“A united multiracial, multinational working class is the greatest threat to the hegemony of capital, since workers realize their greatest power to combat exploitation through collective organization rooted in the workplace and in the community. Immigration policy has served to atomize the working class along racial and national lines and to encourage separate planes of consciousness, such as being “American”, “white” or a “citizen” versus being “Mexican”, an “immigrant” or “illegal”. These designations artificially relocate the divisions in society within the working class rather than along the actually existing fault lines between capital and labor. At the heart of immigration restriction is competition, the fact that, under capitalism, different workers must compete over scarce resources, as allocated by a supposedly neutral state”
