Stop the Cuts Coalition Mtg.
March 5 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm UTC-6
The Stop the Cuts Coalition (SCC) is a coalition of campus and community groups organizing opposition to Gov. Eric Greitens’ proposed $98 million cut to public higher education in Missouri. These cuts would come on the heels of last year’s $159 million reduction in appropriations for Missouri’s public colleges and universities, which resulted in the elimination of 475 jobs across the UM system.
To make up for the lost revenue, state colleges and universities are supporting a bill in the Legislature that would allow them to raise tuition by up to 10% beyond the rate of inflation, or about $1,100 per year for a resident student of MU.
We believe that these budget cuts and proposed tuition hikes are not the inevitable result of uncontrollable economic forces, but the consequences of years of deliberate erosion of the state’s revenue base through tax cuts. According to the Missouri Budget Project, state corporate tax collection fell by $155 million (36%) between FY ’15 and FY ’16, due to changes in laws governing tax collection.
The Stop the Cuts Coalition is built around three core principles:
1. Education is a right! Higher education is a public good that should be fully funded.
2. NO cuts! The proposed cuts to higher education are unnecessary and must be stopped.
3. NO tuition hikes! Cutting corporate taxes on the backs of Missouri’s students is wrong
If you care about the future of higher education in Missouri, join us for our next organizing meeting on March 5 from 7-8:30 p.m. in Middlebush 206 on the MU campus.
