The United Teachers of Los Angeles recently voted to authorize a future strike. Negotiations with the school board have already reached an impasse and they are currently in mediation. Due to strong support for a strike among UTLA members and school district administration full of corporate liberals, a strike at some date is likely.
The ISO and other groups organized a forum at California State University Los Angeles on October 9 to build solidarity for the teachers of UTLA. The forum was opened by a Cal State LA student and ISO member. They were followed by remote appearances from teachers strike leaders from Puerto Rico (Mercedes Martinez,) West Virginia (Emily Comer) and Arizona (Rebecca Garelli.) Following the labor leaders were two high school activists from an anti-racist student group, Students Deserve. Then a group of parent activists from Eastside Padres Contra La Privatización spoke. Finally, UTLA and ISO member Gillian spoke about the lessons of the Red State teachers’ rebellion last Spring and how they connect to building workers’ power and fighting for socialism in solid blue California.
